Artist Biography

Like many musicians, James Kellerman first ventured into playing on the family piano. From the age of 5, he began making up tunes and remained largely self-taught, despite a year of piano lessons. In his suburban Chicago school he played the saxophone, learning about big band jazz and classical music. Accepting a full scholarship in 1984 to the University of Arizona Music School, he immersed himself in playing saxophone and flute.

This early enthusiasm was followed by ten years away from music, but slowly Kellerman returned and in 1997 recommitted himself to music, becoming a full time performer and teacher. He's made two national tours with Troupe American Theater Company, as well as performing with the Guthrie Theater and Theatre de la Jeune Lune. In addition to working as a performer, Jim has also been an enthusiastic and inspiring private lesson teacher, at one point in the late 1990's teaching 25 students a week.

Kellerman's eclectic musical career led him to establish James Kellerman Music, a record label and distribution company. This expanded his roles to that of ensemble director, composer, arranger and record producer. His considerable talents and devotion to producing high quality music were rewarded when his debut album "A Christmas Prayer" was awarded the 2002 Minnesota Music Award for Best Classical Ensemble Recording. This album is available through gift and music stores, and from this website (click here)

Since 2003 James has been having a great time performing in senior citizen settings. His "one man show" has been wildly popular and successful with approximately 2000 shows performed all over the country from California to Colorado, Arizona to Illinois, Missouri to Minnesota. (Click for reviews)

In 2006 James decided to return to college and complete his bachelor's degree in Music Composition at the University of Wisconsin Eau Claire. Just a few credits remain but that goal is very near completion

James currently lives in Lake City Mn. with his son Josh. He enjoys being active outside (x/c skiing, running, biking) and staying engaged in politics, current events and creating a sustainable future.
